Writing for Scholarly Publication (Theory and Practice)
Introduction
When the aims and objectives of this course are seen collectively, the ultimate expression of the course could be summed up in the phrase, “Writing For Scholarly Publication“. This phrase encompasses a wide variety of writing forms, which has been termed, “genre” by Professor John Swales (1990). Swales is a highly regarded expert and pioneer in the field of Genre Theory.
The two genres of specific interest for the Academic Writing III course have been defined as the scholarly, investigative Research Article (hereafter RA) and the argumentative essay. Turning to the teaching of ESL/EFL academic writing, unfortunately, there are two paradigms currently in use when teaching ESL/EFL students worldwide.
This situation is undesirable, but reflects the existing “disconnect” between L2 writing pedagogy on the one hand and the assessment of L2 writing on the other. Therefore, in this paper the historical development of this situation will be discussed, in broad terms. In addition, some general recommendations for the contents of Academic Writing III course will be made.
